Join me to walk around Thorney Island exploring the long tradition of Beating the Bounds during Rogationtide.
West Thorney Parish is a particularly fitting place to explore this tradition. It is small enough to walk around in a day and can be followed along the boundary for much of the way thanks to it being an island with a public footpath running around three sides. On the fourth side we’ll have to divert slightly inland—unless anyone is keen on a muddy swim!
Tradition aside, this is also a wonderful coastal walk. Along the way we’ll encounter military history, visit the island’s church, and enjoy wide views across Chichester Harbour. The halfway point is Pilsey Sands, a beautifully quiet stretch of white dunes and beach – an ideal spot for a picnic and perhaps even a paddle. And best of all, there isn’t a hill in sight!
Don’t forget to bring a stick to do some ‘beating’ of the bounds!

RURAL STRIDES
Rural Strides is passionate about the rich history and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through our engaging guided walks, we bring the land to life. We interpret its stories, uncover its heritage, and reveal the character that makes this corner of the South Downs so special. Along the way, we introduce you to inspiring local businesses, each rooted in the community and landscape we share.
Our aim is simple: to create authentic, memorable experiences that connect you with the place and its people. By the end of a Rural Strides walk, you won’t just have explored the Western Weald, you’ll feel like a local.
