Dead to Yew is a 6-mile guided walk that puts one of Britain’s most ancient and enigmatic trees at the heart of the journey.
The yew tree has long been entwined with myth, memory, and mortality. Found standing sentinel in churchyards across the country, it raises as many questions as it answers. Why is a tree so closely associated with death also a symbol of eternal life? Why does it flourish in places of mourning?
Often called the “Hampshire Weed” due to its fondness for the county’s calcareous soils, the yew is a botanical paradox: evergreen, yet poisonous; slow-growing, yet impossibly long-lived. Its roots run deep in both the landscape and our cultural imagination.
This walk links three beautiful Hampshire village churchyards, each known for their historic yew trees. Along the way, we’ll explore the natural history, folklore, and curious contradictions of this remarkable species. Expect quiet paths, thoughtful conversation, and time to reflect under the branches of trees that have witnessed centuries.
Come and discover why the yew is so much more than just a tree—it’s a living mystery.
