Given the shorter daylight hours and the distance involved, this is an opportunity to walk the section of The Petworth Way between Petworth and Amberley station, covering approx three-quarters of the route’s second stage. I am planning a walk from Arundel next year, which will provide the opportunity to complete the remaining quarter (as part of a different walk) and to officially tick off the entire Petworth Way.
The Petworth Way is a scenic walking trail linking Haslemere and Arundel, with historic Petworth at its heart. This linear route offers walkers a chance to explore the diverse landscapes, rich history, and quiet charm of the Western Weald’s eastern border.
This guided walk will begin by crossing the River Rother, before gradually climbing up the Upper Greensand ‘bench’ towards the foot of the Downs at Bignor. From there, the route traverses the South Downs diagonally, joining a section of the South Downs Way before descending into the Arun valley and our finishing at Amberley Station.

Logistics
- Taxi from Petersfield: I will arrange taxis to take people from Petersfield station to Petworth. We can then take the train back to Petersfield at the end of the walk.
- Bus to Start: If starting/finishing in Petersfield doesn’t suit you, an alternative option could be to travel to Petworth by bus from either Worthing or Chichester (perhaps after first having parked a car at the station), so you can travel back home/to your car by train
- Alternatively, you are welcome to plan your own logistics between Petworth and Amberley.
Rural Strides
At Rural Strides, we’re passionate about celebrating the rich heritage and beauty of the Western Weald. Through thoughtfully curated walks, we bring the landscape to life — interpreting its history, uncovering local stories, and revealing the wonders that make this corner of the countryside so special.
Our guided experiences forge a deeper connection between people and place. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to inspiring local businesses, artisans, and producers who also shape the character of the region. Each walk offers more than a route; it’s a journey into the heart of the Western Weald’s rural charm.
Whether you’re a seasoned rambler or simply curious to explore, we hope a Rural Strides walk gives you an authentic and memorable experience — one that leaves you feeling like a local, with a deeper appreciation for the land beneath your feet and the stories it holds.
