This summer walk to Selsey explores the story of baptism and the arrival of Christianity in Sussex. Beginning inland and ending at the sea, it follows the older idea of baptism not simply as a church ceremony, but the start of a journey.

The route passes through a landscape where, in the seventh century, Wilfrid brought Christianity to the South Saxons. Along the way we will explore how baptism evolved over time. The walk ends, appropriately, on the beach at Selsey with the chance to take a dip (toe or whole body!) and enjoy a picnic….or perhaps fish and chips and an ice cream.

This is a linear walk. The 9.30 start is the departure time of the No. 51 bus from outside the former Army & Navy store in Chichester. We will take the bus to Sidlesham Common, then walk to Selsey. There are at least two buses an hour back to Chichester from near the seafront in Selsey. I anticipate catching the bus back to Chichester around 3.30/4pm but you are welcome to travel back at any time that suits you after about 2pm.

RURAL STRIDES

Rural Strides is passionate about the rich history and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through our engaging guided walks, we bring the land to life. We interpret its stories, uncover its heritage, and reveal the character that makes this corner of the South Downs so special. Along the way, we introduce you to inspiring local businesses, each rooted in the community and landscape we share.

Our aim is simple: to create authentic, memorable experiences that connect you with the place and its people. By the end of a Rural Strides walk, you won’t just have explored the Western Weald, you’ll feel like a local.
