Rooted in History is a six and a half mile walk that traces the story of how humans tamed the great Wealden Forest over 8,000 years, from Mesolithic times to the Anglo-Saxons. This is the second walk in a three-part series. It follows on from The Wild Wood and precedes Fuel the Fire.

Despite being referred to as the ‘Wild Wood’ the great Wealden forest has never been entirely wild, people have shaped it for millennia. Wood was the foundation of early societies, and each civilisation that encountered the forest managed its trees in their own way. As we walk, we’ll uncover traces of these past interactions and explore how human hands have shaped the landscape over time.

Trees are the silent keepers of our rural heritage, yet few have survived the centuries. Only some ancient yews remain as living witnesses to the past. To truly experience this journey, you’ll need to walk with curiosity and imagination, picturing the forest as it once was and sensing the layers of history beneath your feet.

Well-behaved, patient dogs on leads are welcome.

RURAL STRIDES

At Rural Strides, we’re passionate about celebrating the rich heritage and beauty of the Western Weald. Through thoughtfully curated walks, we bring the landscape to life,  interpreting its history, uncovering local stories, and revealing the wonders that make this corner of the countryside so special.

Our guided experiences forge a deeper connection between people and place. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to inspiring local businesses, artisans, and producers who also shape the character of the region. Each walk offers more than a route; it’s a journey into the heart of the Western Weald’s rural charm.

Whether you’re a seasoned rambler or simply curious to explore, we hope a Rural Strides walk gives you an authentic and memorable experience, one that leaves you feeling like a local, with a deeper appreciation for the land beneath your feet and the stories it holds.
