This walk leads through quiet countryside to a church that stands apart from any other locally, shaped by an unusually close relationship between faith and family. For centuries the family has left their mark here, not only in stone and memorials but in the very arrangement of the building itself. Within its walls, signs of private devotion sit alongside public worship, giving the church a distinctive and unexpected character.

The stories connected to this church’s patron speak of inheritance, obligation and continuity. Questions of succession once cast long shadows, while other traditions have been carefully sustained, linking past and present through acts of giving and remembrance. It is a place where history feels close at hand, and one that stayed with me long after my visit – I hope it does the same for you.

Along the way there will be a picnic lunch and a drink/toilet stop at a pub.

Dogs on leads welcome

RURAL STRIDES

Rural Strides is passionate about the rich history and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through our engaging guided walks, we bring the land to life. We interpret its stories, uncover its heritage, and reveal the character that makes this corner of the South Downs so special. Along the way, we introduce you to inspiring local businesses, each rooted in the community and landscape we share.

Our aim is simple: to create authentic, memorable experiences that connect you with the place and its people. By the end of a Rural Strides walk, you won’t just have explored the Western Weald, you’ll feel like a local.
