On this VE Day walk, we will be journeying back through over a thousand years of military history, uncovering the imprint of war on the landscape of the Western Weald. But this won’t be a dry history lesson—far from it. Instead, we’ll be bringing the past to life, exploring the hidden scars and stories left behind by centuries of conflict…..sometimes in the most obscure places.
In our quiet corner of the world, it’s easy to feel removed from the turmoil of global events. The rolling hills and peaceful woodlands seem untouched by war. But beneath the surface tranquility lies a very different story—one that history is waiting to reveal.
For a woman, I may be a little unusual in my fascination with war. It began with a somewhat macabre childhood curiosity about Pol Pot and the Killing Fields of Cambodia and eventually led me to a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies (of the military kind, not business). I later worked as a Political Risk Analyst, studying conflicts and their global impacts. Leading this walk allows me to bring together both my passions.
If you have joined me for War Footing before, please note this will be a slightly different route with some new finds.

Malinka’s walk was very well organised and very informative. Will definitely go on more Rural Strides walks in the future.
