Chalk grassland is one of the most species-rich habitats in the UK, teeming with wildflowers, butterflies, birds, and a wealth of other wildlife. Among its most enchanting plants are the wild orchids. While these delicate flowers can be spotted from early spring through late summer, the greatest diversity flourishes in late May and June, offering a memorable find for those who take the time to seek them out
Leading a large group into such a fragile area would be irresponsible, so this is deliberately a small walk. Unlike bold garden flowers, wild orchids are masters of subtlety, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. Their delicate forms and muted tones mean they don’t immediately give away their location—we will have to slow down, look closely, and search carefully to find them. But that moment of discovery, spotting a perfectly formed orchid among the grasses and other wildflowers, is what makes the experience so rewarding.
No dogs on this walk, thank you
