You know the phrase “seen but not heard” – but the bird at the heart of this walk is very much the opposite: heard but rarely seen. The European Nightjar is a secretive, seasonal visitor to our heathlands, best known for its distinctive churring call that drifts through warm summer evenings. In truth, it’s possibly good that it stays out of sight – its mottled, almost prehistoric appearance has often been described as something of a relic from another age.

As dusk settles, we’ll pause to listen for its call while also taking time to sit beneath the stars, picking out summer constellations and taking in the wider night sky. A simple but memorable way to reconnect with the natural world, experiencing the rare combination of open landscape, warm evening air, and a rarely heard sound.

  • This will be a small group walk
  • Location might be subject to change
  • No dogs please

RURAL STRIDES

Rural Strides is passionate about the rich history and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through our engaging guided walks, we bring the land to life. We interpret its stories, uncover its heritage, and reveal the character that makes this corner of the South Downs so special. Along the way, we introduce you to inspiring local businesses, each rooted in the community and landscape we share.

Our aim is simple: to create authentic, memorable experiences that connect you with the place and its people. By the end of a Rural Strides walk, you won’t just have explored the Western Weald, you’ll feel like a local.
