This walk is in aid of the Bowelbabe Cancer Research fund. The first 4.5 miles from Tower Hill to Goodge Street is a journey from Roman times to the present day following London’s ongoing issues with sewage. Along the way, we will learn out about Samuel Pepys’ unwelcome overflow and Dick Whittington’s giant toilet (with seating for over 100).  Find out what really is under the Thames embankments and why the big stink of 1858 lead to a complete overhaul of the city’s drainage.

Also included along the route are a tucked away cocktail bar and café in a Victorian men’s loos, plus the newly opened Tideway super sewer along the Thames that cost over £4.5 billion. The walk doesn’t involve going into any sewers!

This walk is courtesy of The Walking Post, a London-based walking group. Their routes are all accessible by train and within an hour of the city. This was set up by two friends, Lucy and Emily. Lucy created the Rural Strides website.

From Goodge Street there will then be an option to extend the walk with another section through Marylebone to Regents Park, and along the canal to either Camden or Kings Cross, depending on how far you’d like to walk. On the plus side, relative to the Weald in November it is all flat and not muddy!

Well behaved dogs on leads allowed

So as to collect walker details and money in one place, this walk costs £5 per person. I will then send all money raised to Bowel Babe and notify The Walking Post of our contribution to their fund-raising.

If you are not free on 15 November but would like to do this walk, you can pay to download the information and walk it in your own time. See HERE for details.

RURAL STRIDES

Rural Strides is passionate about the rich history and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through our engaging guided walks, we bring the land to life. We interpret its stories, uncover its heritage, and reveal the character that makes this corner of the South Downs so special. Along the way, we introduce you to inspiring local businesses, each rooted in the community and landscape we share.

Our aim is simple: to create authentic, memorable experiences that connect you with the place and its people. By the end of a Rural Strides walk, you won’t just have explored the Western Weald, you’ll feel like a local.
