This walk around Ebernoe Common is truly off the beaten path. Nestled on the fringe of the Western Weald, Ebernoe is a living fragment of history, a place where time pools as quietly as the still waters of the old hammer pond, a lingering trace of the Wealden Iron industry, once alive here with fire and forge.
This isn’t a manicured trail or a well-trodden route. It’s a journey into one of the Low Weald’s finest remnants of old English woodland, where tradition and nature are deeply entwined. Beneath the ever-shifting canopy, we’ll walk in the shadowy paths once trodden by deer, charcoal-burners, and perhaps even medieval pilgrims.
I don’t usually favour walks that stay under the trees for too long, but Ebernoe is the exception. There’s something about its woodland that gets under your skin. The birdsong, the ancient trees, the sense of deep-rooted quiet, it draws you in. A walk here is more than just a wander; it’s a gentle, grounding return to the old rhythms of the land. It’s a place that feels like it’s been waiting, and welcomes you back.
Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome.
