This walk will be led by Fiona Scully, South Downs Landscape Officer for the charity Butterfly Conservation. In her role, Fiona is responsible for the care and management of Magdalen Hill Down and Yew Hill nature reserves near Winchester—two key havens for butterflies and chalk grassland wildlife. She is also a volunteer ranger for the Graffham Down Trust which protects 6 discreet parcels of local downland.

Beyond her professional life, Fiona is a dedicated walker with a deep love for the landscapes of the South Downs, particularly the quieter corners of West Sussex. This walk brings together her intimate knowledge of the Graffham Trust Reserves with her specialist insight into butterflies and their habitats.

The route itself is a short one, but what it lacks in mileage it more than makes up for in richness—both in information and (with luck) in butterfly sightings. The Graffham Reserves are a collection of hidden gems, scattered pockets of land nestled high on the Downs. This patchwork of chalk grassland, scrub, and woodland creates the perfect conditions for a wide variety of wildlife. As we explore, expect more than just butterflies—look out for birds & wildflowers too.

The walk is starting a little later than normal. This is because butterflies like a bit of warmth before they take to the wing. With the later start we advise you to bring some lunch.

  • Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome
  • Proceeds of this walk go to Butterfly Conservation

Rural Strides is driven by a passion for the geology, history, and cultural landscape of the Western Weald. Through immersive walks that bring the land to life with stories and local insights, I aim to deepen your connection to this remarkable countryside and the inspiring businesses I partner with.

My walks offer more than just a journey—they provide an authentic and memorable experience, leaving you with a true sense of place. By the end, I hope you’ll not only feel enriched by the landscape but also like a local yourself.
