Every child knows the nursery rhyme “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, but how many have actually been out at night to see them? This February, as part of the South Downs National Park’s Dark Skies Festival, join us for a short, gentle night walk designed especially for young children and their families.
We’ll set out on a flat route to the former Iron Age fort at Old Winchester Hill, one of the best night sky spots in the National Park. From the top, you will enjoy 360-degree views that demonstrate both man’s effect on the night sky as well as the natural darkness that makes the South Downs a Dark Sky Reserve.
This will be a slow, immersive sensory experience that provides a chance to connect with the night. Although our eyes will slowly adjust to the dark, we’ll also use our ears, noses, skin and feet to explore the sounds, scents and lie of the land around us. If the weather is kind, we’ll spot some key winter constellations.
Too many long, cold nights are spent indoors, but darkness is not something to fear – it’s something to celebrate. So wrap up warm, bring a sense of adventure and discover how magical the night can be.
This walk is for primary aged children & accompanying adults only
No dogs on this walk, thank you

Read what others have said about their night walking experience with Rural Strides:
I found out about Reclaim The Night via the South Downs Dark Skies Festival. Malinka, who leads the group walks, is so approachable, helpful and articulate. I came to the event solo and felt very welcome and safe. I loved my evening adventure 🙂
What a wonderful experience. Being bathed in the moonlight, seeing the stars glittering, hearing the night sounds and picking up the different scents as made our way was a lifetime experience and a humbling one too. One I will never forget.
A wonderful night walk which awakened all the senses.
