Trees have been a consistent theme through this year’s walks, they are, after all, the heart and soul of the Weald.
Few people know this better than woodsman Ben Law, who has spent decades living and working among the trees of this landscape. In a recent conversation, Ben pointed out something striking: in most parts of the country, your eye is drawn to the scattered woodlands that break up expanses of fields, but in the Weald, it’s the reverse. Here, trees dominate, and it’s the open fields that feel like the exception.
To help us see the Weald through his eyes, Ben has kindly invited a small group to visit his woodland near Langham Brewery. From a stunning viewpoint, he’ll show us exactly what he means about the pattern of trees and fields. He’ll also talk us through how he manages Prickly Nut Wood, his home and working woodland for over 30 years, and share insights into sustainable woodland living and traditional forestry practices. This is a rare chance to spend time in a truly special place with someone who knows it inside out.
The walk starts and finishes at Langham Brewery, just a short distance from Ben’s woodland. After the walk, there’ll be the opportunity to enjoy a well-earned drink. Ben himself is known to appreciate a pint here, making it the perfect spot to round off the experience.
PS….If you love craft ale and would like to understand a little more about how it’s done, Langham offer a guided tour and tasting of their 10 barrel steam-heated brewery. You can find out more here. Also, for the budding brewer or beer connoisseur there is a Brew Day Experience.
